Understanding Self-harm

Self-harm: the intentional, direct infliction of damage to your body.

Self-harm is misunderstood and stigmatized, as is mental health and illness. Although self-harm can be used as a suicide attempt, a majority of those that engage in self-injurious behaviors are coping with a mental health issue.

I have been free from cutting for five years. I utilized self-harm in order to cope for about a decade. Although I struggle with urges to this day, I have found more effective and positive ways to manage my emotions. The use of self-harm indicates a lack of effective and positive coping skills.
